WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County Huskies put three players on the Mountain Valley All-Conference football team.

Senior quarterback Colin Ellis, senior linebacker Sam Henson and junior wide receiver Grant Thompson received all-conference honors for their outstanding play during the 2016 season.

Ellis set a pair of school records with 51 total touchdowns and 4,676 total yards despite an injury-plagued season for so many of Ashe’s skill position players. Wide receivers Dante Shuler and Judd Price were only able to play in five games this season while senior running back Skye Sullivan never took a snap after suffering a season-ending injury in preseason. Ellis ended up with the second-most passing yards in North Carolina with 3,464.

For Thompson, he was able to avoid the injury bug and ended up having a stellar junior season. He led the Huskies in receiving with 64 catches for 1,099 yards and was tied for the team lead in receiving scores with nine.

Henson was one of the leaders of the Husky defense all year long. The linebacker was also one of the leading tacklers for the team.

Ashe had three players that received honorable mention accolades for their success on the field: Offensive linemen Ethan Shepherd and Jesse Kemp as well as linebacker Tristen Jones.

North Wilkes running back Jarrett Grimes was named MVAC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the conference and the state in rushing with 2,547 yards to go with 29 touchdowns.

Wilkes Central’s Dedric Smith took home MVAC Defensive Player of the Year honors while his head coach, Ron Turner, was named MVAC Coach of the Year.
