Tennis season underway for Maloney

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The 2017 tennis season has started for former Ashe County Husky standout Haley Maloney. Maloney is in her senior season for the King University Tornado.

King traveled to Wofford for an exhibition match on Feb. 5 against the Southern Conference squad. Wofford came away with a 7-0 victory.

Annie Mayfield defeated Maloney in singles action, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, Catherine Martin and Lauren Reid beat Maloney and Catherine Vezey in doubles, 6-0.

The Tornado had their first conference match of the season against Erskine College, who is always a front-runner in women’s tennis. Erskine cruised to a 9-0 win on Feb. 16.

In singles action, Rebecca Weaver edged past Maloney with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In doubles play, Weaver and Katie Loudermilk were 8-3 winners over Maloney and Alyssa Salazar.

Maloney and the rest of her Tornado teammates will be off until March 9 when King travels to Limestone College for their second Conference Carolinas match of the year.
