WILKESBORO — Ashe County and four other area teams took part in a non-conference match at Oakwoods Country Club on Thursday with the Huskies starting the season with a third place finish.
Wilkes Central played well on their home course, shooting a team score of 147. Forbush was second with a score of 165, followed by Ashe in third with 192, Starmount in fourth with 194 and West Wilkes in fifth with a score of 197.
The Eagles had four of the top five scores in the match. Garrett Dawson and Quentin Metz finished tied for first with a 36. Chandler Metz fired a 37 for third while Spencer Hayes and Starmount’s Chris Fillingame tied for fourth with a 38.
Ashe’s best round went to Caleb Scott who ended up with a score of 46. Ben Brooks was two shots back of Scott with a 48, as was teammate Jack Hinson. Daniel Lipscomb finished with a 50 and Corey Carter shot a 53.
The Huskies have two more non-conference matches remaining on the schedule, assuming the weather cooperates.
Ashe will go back to Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro this Thursday for a match with West Wilkes. The final non-conference warm up will be at Mountain Aire on Monday, March 27 with West Wilkes and Wilkes Central making the short trip up the mountain.
Mountain Valley Athletic Conference matches are slated to begin on Thursday, March 30.
