BOONE — The Ashe All-Stars 8U team took second place in the Tarheel League District Tournament and earned a spot in the upcoming state tournament.
Ashe jumped all over a pair of teams from Wilkes County on July 11, the first day of the tourney. The All-Stars beat Wilkes American Orange, 13-1 and followed that up with a 15-5 pounding of Wilkes National Navy.
On Tuesday, July 14, Ashe suffered a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Wilkes American Royal team.
With a spot in the semifinals on the line, Ashe took down the Wilkes National Navy team for the second time last Thursday, this one by a 10-2 score.
On Friday, Ashe got a rematch with Wilkes American Royal in game one and scored a 10-9 win to set up a third game between the two squads.
In the championship game, the bats came to life for the royal team and outlasted Ashe for a 12-2 win and the district championship.
The 8U district bracket featured four teams from Wilkes, one team from Ashe and one team from Watauga. By finishing as runner-up, the Ashe All-Stars punched their ticket to the state tournament in Washington, North Carolina starting July 30.
The players and parents would also like to extend a special thank you to all of those that supported the barbecue fundraiser. Through the community’s efforts, the proceeds from the fundraiser were enough to pay for hotel accommodations for each player and their families at the state championship tournament.
