WILKESBORO — The men’s tennis team wrapped up a successful week on Thursday with a 5-4 victory over Wilkes Central. This was the team’s third win of the week with two of those coming in conference action.

“This was indeed a big win for us. I am so proud of the boys for winning all three matches this week,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

The Huskies picked up wins in the second, fourth and sixth seeded matches.

Second seeded Noah Gouge defeated Nick Johnson, 6-3, 7-5. Fourth seeded Devin Rupard bounced back to beat Abel O’Sullivan after dropping the first set, 4-6, 6-2, 12-10. The final singles win was sixth seeded Corbin Coldiron cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Austin Barker.

Wilkes Central’s Daniel Vimont took down top seeded Jacob Key, 7-5, 6-0. John Brame got the Eagles another win with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 triumph over third seeded Simon Houck. Jonathan Hernandez was a 6-2, 7-6 winner over Ashe’s Joseph Nguyen in the fifth seeded match.

With the match all knotted up at 3-3, the doubles matches would prove to be the key to victory.

Thankfully for Ashe, two of the three doubles matches went their way to get the overall team win.

Gouge and Rupard teamed up to beat Brame and O’Sullivan, 8-2, while Nguyen and Coldiron took down Hernandez and Shivam Borad, 8-2. The top seeded doubles match went to Wilkes Central with Vimont and Johnson beating Key and Houck, 9-8.
