BANNER ELK — Former Ashe County Husky and current Lees-McRae College senior Erin Bingham’s final outdoor track and field season is underway with a pair of early season hurdle victories already under her belt.
Bingham had a stellar indoor track season that wrapped up in February with a Conference Carolinas Championship in the 60-meter hurdles and a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Southeast Region team.
Bingham’s outdoor season started on March 18 in Hickory for the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational with 12 colleges in attendance for the meet. She was one of three Lees-McRae track and field athletes to win their respective events. She blazed down the track in 14.99 seconds to take first in the 100-meter hurdles.
Lees-McRae then took part in the Montreat Invitational that took place on Saturday, March 31 in Black Mountain. Bingham helped the women’s team place fourth overall out of 14 schools by once again winning the 100-meter hurdles race and taking fifth place in the 200-meter dash. Her time in the hurdles was 14.77 seconds while her 200-meter dash time clocked in at 26.91 seconds. Bingham and teammate Mekayla Boswell were the lone Bobcat athletes to pick up victories. Boswell won the high jump with a leap that cleared just over five feet.
The Bobcats’ most recent event was the Beynon Catamount Classic, held April 14-15 at Western Carolina University.
Bingham’s fourth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles was tied for the top finish of the weekend for the team. She finished the race in 14.64 seconds. Bingham also competed in the 200-meter dash again, finishing in 27.27 seconds (32nd place overall).
Next up for Bingham and the rest of the Lees-McRae squad will be the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championship held at Clemson University on April 28-29.
