Mustangs eliminate Huskies, 14-1

DENVER — East Lincoln scored 14 unanswered runs on Wednesday night to defeat Ashe County in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, 14-1.

Ashe scored in the top of the first inning to take a brief 1-0 lead before the Mustangs responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The score remained the same until the third inning when East Lincoln exploded for 11 runs to put the game out of reach for the visiting Huskies.

East Lincoln hammered out three home runs with one each coming from Alec Burleson, Taylor Michel and Nate Kinsch.

Michel finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI’s and three runs scored. Kinsch finished the game with four runs knocked in. Overall, the Mustangs were able to get nine hits off of Husky pitching.

On the mound, Burleson got the win, pitching three innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Tyler Cox pitched the final two innings in relief without allowing any base runners.

The Huskies finished the season with a 10-12 overall record. For the Mustangs, they advance on to take on 12th seeded East Rutherford.
