Fleetwood, N.C. February 21, 1919 April 19, 2008 Mr. Richard Edward East, age 89, of Fleetwood, passed away on Saturday evening, April 19, 2008 at Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2008 at 11:00 am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Styron officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery with full military rites. The family received friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am, one hour prior to the funeral service. Mr. East was born in Greenwich, CT on Friday, February 21, 1919 to the late Harry James and Ella Mae Miller East. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific as a Staff Sergeant of the 306th infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He was a Self-Employed Truck Driver. He is a member of First Assembly of God. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Violet Richert East, of the home; a son, Ronald East and wife Sharon, of Blue Ridge, GA; a daughter, Beverly Thompson and husband Timothy, of Fleetwood; a brother, David East and wife Helen, of Dunedin, Florida; a sister, Blanche Burke, of Absecon, New Jersey; five grandchildren, David East, Kimberly Weaver, Amy Ramey, Zachary Thompson, Kaessey Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Erica East, Megan Lovell, Skylar Ramey, several nieces and nephews also survive. He was also preceded in death by; six brothers, Harry, Clifford, Robert “Bob,” William, Ralph and Walter East; two sisters; Lenora Smith and Mae East. Flowers are appreciated and/or memorials can be made to First Assembly of God Church to assist with the paving of the parking lot. Over the years Richard assisted with many church projects, in his younger days this would be one he would have also assisted with.
