Mrs. Phipps was born on Jan. 20, 1920 in Grassy Creek, NC to the late Avery and Jestine Stuart Barker. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Phipps was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Paul Jones Phipps; two sisters, Josephine Barker Smith and Nannie Barker Johnston; four brothers, Chester Barker, Gilbert Barker, Robert Barker, and Roger Barker.
Mrs. Phipps was a homemaker. She was a good pastor's wife who helped her husband in revivals and hosted visiting pastors. She taught Bible school and Sunday school and was a good witness to everyone. Her many interests included writing and gardening.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Reeves Jones and the Rev. Billy Joe Blevins. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Flowers will be appreciated.
Mrs. Phipps is survived by: son, Robert Lee Phipps of West Jefferson; daughter, Pauline "Polly" Phipps Honbarrier of Avon Park, FL; sister, Ruby Barker Brooks of Jefferson; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
