Mr. Poe was born on Sept. 26, 1920 in Ashe County to William Jesse and Gussie Hunt Poe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Poe was preceded in death by sister, Kathleen LaPrad, and brother, Gaither Poe.
Mr. Poe loved to work on the farm, watching the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves baseball and he enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, especially Ralph Stanley. Mr. Poe was known as a kind and gentle man. He was a member of Wagoner Baptist Church.
Mr. Poe is survived by his wife, Velma Poe of Laurel Springs; two sons, Earl William (E.J.) Poe, Jr. of Laurel Springs, and Gary Poe of Cornelius; two sisters, Lena Cox of Laurel Springs and Ethel Davis of Crumpler; also surviving are one grandchild, John Michael Poe, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dean Shepherd and the Rev. Everette Little. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
