Elwood Lovell of Kannapolis went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center - NE. He was 78.

Elwood was born on June 10, 1933, to the late Ervin Burley Lovell and the late Carrie Viola Bare Lovell.

Mr. Lovell loved to fish with his wife and hunt. He enjoyed spending time with his family and adored his grandchildren. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Kannapolis and served his country honorably in the Army during the Korean War.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Ruth Newton Lovell; and sister, Betty Gray Bower.

He is survived by daughter, Susan Horton and her husband Gary, granddaughter, Leigh Ann Long and her husband, Darren; grandson, Brian Puckett and Wendi Doak; stepgrandchildren, Brandy and Robert Horton; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Kaitlyn Chewning and Dylan Long; step great-grandchildren, Elise and Sammy Bowman and Baylen Hopkins; sister, Loraine Bower and her husband, John; brother, Turrell Lovell; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.

The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Tim Newton, will be held in the Hartsell Funeral Home chapel at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Cabarrus County Honor Guard.

At other times the family will meet at the home.
