In the final regular season match of the year, the Ashe County Huskies easily swept non-conference foe Oak Hill Academy 9-0.
“Our players played well and worked on some match skills for the (conference) tournament,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Ashe County ended the year winning its final two games, and are playing well at the right time of the year.
“It is always a good way to end the regular season with two wins, this week against Alleghany and Oak Hill,” said Coach Dix.
Top seed Zeb Richardson kept his opponent Edson Vences from winning a single game as he took both sets 6-0, 6-0.
Sam Bowers battled with August Kern in the match of second seeded athletes. Bowers took the first set 7-5 and won the match with a 6-3 win in the second set.
Lucas Zeller and Josh Meghoo were both 6-1, 6-3 winners over Marcus Hoetzel and Tae Joo Yung. Fourth seeded Will Church beat Won Jun Jung 6-1, 6-3 and his brother Alex Church beat Joshua Yoon 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles in action, Richardson and Bowers were 8-3 winners over Vences and Kern. Zeller and Meghoo took an 8-4 win over Hoetzel and Jung while the Church brothers claimed an 8-1 win over Yang and Yoon.
The Huskies will return to the court this Tuesday at Elkin in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference qualifier, which will include players from each MVAC team competing in a tournament to determine the singles champion, doubles champion and determine who will go on to regional competition in the 2A state playoffs.
