In a match delayed nearly two hours for rain, the Lady Husky tennis players kept their focus and swept Elkin to pick up another Mountain Valley Conference win.

Ashe picked up wins in all six singles matches, and with the match already decided and the sun slowly setting, the two teams chose not to play doubles matches.

Top seeded Anna Wooten was an 8-2 winner over Payton Nicholson. Second seed Haley Maloney took an 8-0 victory over Elise Corregan to put Ashe ahead two games to zero.

Maggie Witherspoon played as the third seed and won a close 9-7 decision against Alley Gentry.

In the battle of fourth seeds, Mary Austin Tugman captured an 8-4 win against Julie Newmark.

The final two singles matches featured wins from Hayley Ragland and Ella Copeland. Ragland beat Sarah Myers 8-2 and Copeland earned an 8-5 win over GiGi Kakouras.

“I felt the ladies played well under unsettling circumstances of a rain delay and lack of a normal warm-up,” said head coach Larry Dix.

Ashe continues playing without normal third seed Kasey Curcio who is battling nagging injuries. The team will also be without Hallie Brown for the rest of the season as she suffered a knee injury.

“Although we have been plagued with injuries this season, our ladies have worked hard to compensate for these challenges, and have posted a winning record,” said Coach Dix. “We still have a lot of work to do to get ready for the tournament.”

Ashe moved to 9-5 overall and 9-4 in the MVAC.

This week marks the final week of the regular season, and Ashe will close it out with three games. The Lady Huskies traveled to Starmount on Monday and will host West Wilkes on Wednesday for the final home match of the season. Ashe then turns around and travels to North Wilkes on Thursday.

The MVAC tournament is scheduled to take place Oct. 9-10 at Elkin.
