Ashe County Farmers Market welcomed new manager John Smyre this week, and he attended his first market on Saturday. Vendors had a lovely day for the second of two winter events. An expo for vendors is planned March 28, 9 a.m.-noon, and the market opens for the season on Saturdays beginning April 11, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. A native of Charlotte and most recently from Fayetteville, Smyre and his wife, Lucy, have owned property in Ashe for nine years and moved here last August when he retired from Piedmont Natural Gas. They live in High Meadows off Nettle Knob Road in West Jefferson. They have a son in Alaska and a daughter in Winston-Salem, and four grandchildren. Smyre is looking forward to working with the market vendors. “From the day we moved here we have come to the farmers market, and I thought how unique it is to have homegrown and handmade products offered here, taking care of the local growers and crafters. Patty (Shay) has done a great job the past two years with the market, and we hope to expand on that.”
