For the second consecutive year, the Lady Husky cross country team took home the Mountain Valley Conference Championship. Ashe’s top seven runners finished before any of its competitors had four runners finish the race.

Throughout the race, the ladies ran in a single pack, led by Mac Church, who was consistently Ashe’s highest finishing runner each meet this season.

“It was a very close race, so without each of these girls holding their spot in the race just as they did, we would not have won,” said head coach Marybeth Greene.

Church finished in fifth place overall, followed by Tyler Eller in 15th, Victoria Reed in 16th, Chrissy Simmons in 17th, Alexis Armstrong in 18th and Chelsea Eller in 20th.

Caroline Trent was the seventh runner for Ashe as she took 23rd place. The freshman, who is new to this type of event, has made great gains all season according to her coach.

“We really needed all seven girls to win,” added Coach Greene.

“I told the girls in a meeting before the race, ‘you are good enough to be the champions if you run like it and you want to win, you will win.’ They wanted to, and it showed. I’m very proud of them.”

On the men’s side, the race was tight throughout, and Ashe ended up with a fifth place finish.

“We did not have any runners placing in the single digits, and it hurt us,” said Coach Greene. “However, our boys ran very well, all of them improving their time on this course by a lot.”

The men were led by two freshmen runners, Andrew Tedder and Gareth Berry. Tedder finished in 11th place while Berry took home 19th. Senior Jonathan Nichols finished in 20th place.
