Stella Ruth Huff Baker of Fleetwood passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Hill View Family Care Home in Todd. She was 79.

Ms. Baker was born on May 24, 1933, to the late Dewey and Fannie Greer Huff.

She was born in Ashe County and reared during the Great Depression, where she came to appreciate the simple things in life. For many years she provided child care services from her home for many families in the area who remembered her for her calm and caring nature with their children. She also had a love of gardening and was known for sharing the bounty of vegetables with others in the community.

Those fortunate enough to have tasted her fabulous chow-chow or homemade fudge were instantly hooked. Ruth loved the outdoors, walking and hiking, sunshine and mountain air. And if bluegrass music was playing, it couldn’t get any better than that.

In her later years, the weekly visitation she received at Hill View Family Care Home by Glen Baker was invaluable. All the caring providers at Hill View were a godsend to the family when Ruth required care outside the home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob Huff, Burl Huff, Claude Huff, and Jack Huff, and a sister, Lillian Huff.

Ms. Baker is survived by daughter, Linda Taylor and husband Kyle of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; son, Wayne Baker and wife Myra of Charlotte; four brothers, Jimmy Huff of North Wilkesboro, George Huff of Morganton, Earl Huff of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Kyle Huff of Sparta; a grandson, David Baker; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Jack Miller. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends prior to the funeral service at Ashelawn.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Ashe County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1776, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

You may send and view condolences to the family through our website www.ashelawn.com. Ashelawn Memorial Chapel & Gardens was entrusted with Ms. Baker’s arrangements.
