East Surry made it two straight years knocking off the Huskies in the season opener, this time taking a 51-28 win in Pilot Mountain.
The Cardinals pulled ahead for good after outscoring Ashe 13-4 in the second quarter to take a 26-12 halftime lead. East Surry continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Ashe 12-7 in the third and 13-9 in the fourth to secure the victory.
Seth Brim and Drew Alley were East Surry’s leading scorers. Brim scored 14 and pulled down six rebounds to lead the way while Alley added 12 points, two assists and two steals.
For Ashe, senior Jordan Spell was the leading scorer with eight. Seth Sheets added six points, Eli Gambill had four, Zach Lawrence had three and Sam Bowers added three as well. Johnathan Cox and Alex Laws rounded out Ashe’s scoring totals with two points apiece.
On the glass, Cox pulled down four rebounds. Bowers grabbed three rebounds and Cullen Ashley had two.
Ashe will look to bounce back on Tuesday with the first home game of the 2012 season. The Huskies will host non-conference foe Avery County.
