Ashe tallied 19 fourth-quarter points to come from behind and beat Starmount on Tuesday, 48-43.

The Lady Rams held the lead after the first, second, and third quarters, but could not hold off a late charge from the Lady Huskies.

Ashe took an early 6-4 lead with baskets from Emily Flanagan, Hallie Brown and Morgan Hudler. Starmount finished the first strong with eight of the last 10 points, including six from leading scorer Heaven Walters. The visiting team took a 13-8 lead after one.

Starmount increased its lead to eight points at the halftime break. Ashe got four points from Paige Spell and a free throw from Victoria Reed halfway through the second to get within one point at 18-17, then then saw Walters score eight points down the stretch before the Lady Huskies ended the quarter with a short jumper from Abby Lopp, making the score 29-21.

The lead remained the same for much of the third quarter. Starmount got four points from Whitney Pardue to lead the way as both defenses began to clamp down in the frame with neither team scoring double figures.

Trailing by eight entering the fourth, Ashe opened with five straight from Spell to trim the deficit to three at 37-34. Brown swished a jumper to climb to within a single point, the closest Ashe had been since early in the second quarter.

Following a short jumper from Starmount’s Bralyn Hampton, Flanagan got an easy layup and Chelsea Reavis got to the hoop for a score to give Ashe its first lead since the opening period, 40-39.

Ashe started to extend the lead a bit with shots from Flanagan, Brown and a free throw from Hudler.

Two free throws and a long two-point jumper from Morgan Randleman made the score 45-43 with a little over a minute remaining.

The Lady Huskies hit just enough free throws in the final minute to hold on for the five-point win. Brown hit one of two from the line and Hudler hit a pair while the defense kept Starmount from scoring a single point the rest of the way.

Ashe improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Flanagan’s 12 points led the way, but she had plenty of help from teammates as well. Brown, Hudler and Spell each added seven points. Reavis and Lopp netted four points, Reed finished with three, Alexis Parks had two points and Taylor Price scored two off the bench.

Walters had 17 points for Starmount, but Ashe held her scoreless in the second half, a big reason why the Lady Huskies were able to storm back and get the victory. Hampton and Pardue had six each, and Darion Dobson chipped in five.

Ashe will host East Wilkes this Friday.
