Ashe held its own against the reigning Mountain Valley Conference champs, but a strong finish from West Wilkes gave them a 43-24 victory.

The match began with the 152-pound division where the Blackhawks scored its first win of the night. Drew Sturgill pinned Chase Connor at the 2:40 mark of the match.

The Huskies answered with four straight wins. Joshua Hamilton defeated fellow 160-pounder Austin Griffith by a 7-5 sudden victory decision. Lucas Miller also took his opponent into an overtime period. Miller beat Hayden Sutphin by a 5-3 sudden victory score.

In the 182-pound division, William Miller pinned Zachary Church in 53 seconds, then Justin Scarborough earned a 9-1 major decision against Joshua Kilby in the 190-pound division.

West Wilkes captured victories in the next three contests. Ben Pierce beat Mitchell Brown by a 7-5 decision in the 220-pound division, Eithen Sheets pinned Jason Baker in 57 seconds in the 285-pound division, and 106-pounder Brandon Reynolds won his match via forfeit.

Ashe’s Jacob Weaver earned a big win over Justin Jones, dominating the match on the way to a technical fall victory in the 113-pound division.

In the final five matches, the Blackhawks took wins in four of those to clinch the team victory. At 120-pounds, Casey Willis won a 13-4 major decision over Carter Calhoun, Jake St. Germain pinned Bodi Miller at 3:47 in the battle of 126-pounders, Justin St. Germain pinned Wiley Dillard in 28 seconds in the 132-pound division, and Dustin Huffman won via forfeit in the 138-pound division.

The final match of the day was in the 145-pound division where a pair of the top wrestlers in the state squared off, Ashe’s Michael Elliott and Blackhawk grappler Jorge Lima. Elliott handed Lima just his second loss of the season, winning a 6-3 decision. Elliott remained undefeated on the season, moving to 32-0.

Up next, Ashe will travel to Forbush to take on the Falcons on Tuesday.
