The varsity men’s team played one of its best games of the season, leading from the opening possession all the way to the final buzzer, beating Forbush 59-52.

Earlier in the season, Forbush easily handled Ashe by a score of 63-37. Ashe was able to turn the tables in a big way this time around.

The Huskies sprinted ahead to a 7-0 lead early in the first. Matthew Lee hit two layups and Seth Sheets converted a three-point play after stealing an errant pass and taking it to the basket for a layup and the foul.

Forbush answered back with a pair of baskets from Barrett Hennings to trim the Ashe lead to three points.

Ashe closed the quarter strong with two three-pointers from Jordan Spell and a layup from Sheets. Ashe was up 15-6 after the first.

The Huskies continued to build on its lead with a layup from Johnathan Cox and a free throw Cullen Ashley put the team up 11 points at 18-7.

Forbush got four more points from Hennings and a three-pointer from Bennett Winslow down the stretch to keep the Falcons within striking distance. Ashe had an eight-point advantage at the half.

In the third, Ashe pushed the lead to 11 points, thanks to three points from Eli Gambill and three more from Lee. The big shot of the quarter happened as Spell drilled his third three-pointer of the night at the buzzer to put the Huskies ahead by a score of 40-29.

The Falcons continued to hang around in the fourth quarter. Jacob Funk scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half, carrying nearly the entire offensive load for the visiting team. The Falcons were able to pull within three points late in the fourth, but Ashe did a good job of hitting its free throws in the final period. Ashe hit 17 of 24 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter alone.

Spell was the high scorer with 22 points. Sheets finished with 10 points and four steals, Gambill had seven points and three rebounds and Lee finished with seven points.

Cox had six points and a team-leading five steals. Ashley ended the game with three points, Anderson Moore had three points and Zach Lawrence hit a free throw to round out the scoring.

Funk finished with 18 points for the Falcons. Hennings added 14 and Bryson Lee scored seven in the loss.

The Huskies improved to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. Forbush lost its fifth straight game and dropped to 2-12 overall and 2-7 in the MVAC.

Ashe travels to Starmount on Friday hoping to cap off the season sweep of the Rams. Ashe beat Starmount 38-36 on Dec. 11.
