The Ashe County Board of Commissioners is accepting nominations for the 28th Annual Ashe County Volunteer of the Year Awards ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday April 18 in the Ashe County High School auditorium.
“Ashe County owes a great deal of gratitude to the hundreds of individuals who volunteer their time in so many ways to make our county a better place to live and work,” said County Manager Pat Mitchell in a letter to county agencies and organizations calling for worthy nominees. “We welcome this opportunity to honor these volunteers and show our appreciation for the services they provide.”
“The success of the awards program depends on the willingness of our community leaders and representatives to nominate deserving organizations and individuals,” Mitchell said.
Awards will be given to individuals and organizations for the following categories:
Human Services Volunteer: Volunteers for any human services nonprofit agency in the county.
Individual Community Volunteer: Anyone who has served as a community volunteer either through an organized program or independently.
Youth Volunteer: Anyone who volunteers in their community, school, church, etc.. They may volunteer within an organized program or independently, and may or may not be a student, but must be under 21 years of age.
Senior Citizen Volunteer: An individual over 60 years of age who volunteers in the community either within an organized program or independently.
School/Mentor Volunteer: Someone who volunteers directly with students, such as tutors, classroom assistants, office assistants or youth mentors.
Community Volunteers: Services clubs or special groups organized to address community needs, such as the Lions Club, volunteer fire departments, 4-H, Red Cross or Scouts.
Church/Religious Volunteer or Group: Church youth group, Sunday school class, ladies group, brotherhood, student religious organization, etc., or extraordinary individual who volunteers in a church or religious organization.
Business/Industry Volunteer Involvement: Businesses or industries which have supported community involvement and volunteer efforts.
Nominees must be residents of or located in Ashe County.
Entries should be submitted as a typed or legibly written essay of no more than one page describing as thoroughly as possible the volunteer services performed by the nominee.
