Cameron Guyton and Austin Shew were nearly un-hittable on the mound for Ashe and Wilkes Central, but it would be the Eagles that came away with a 2-1 victory in the conference opener for both squads.

Shew pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits to pick up the victory. Guyton allowed just two runs on five hits, pitching all six innings of the game.

The game was a scoreless battle until the bottom of the fourth inning when Central scored both of its runs. Austin Staley and Jacob McIntyre both connected on run-scoring hits that put the Eagles up 2-0.

Ashe answered back in the top of the fifth when Alex Laws scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1.

The Wilkes Central bullpen pitched the final two innings of the game to secure the victory. The Eagles allowed just one more Ashe hit after the starter departed the game.

Ashe sits at 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. Wilkes Central earned its first win of the season, improving to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MVAC. The Eagles opened the year with a non-conference loss to Hibriten

The Huskies will play three games this week, weather permitting. Ashe travels to Forbush on Tuesday and West Caldwell on Wednesday before its home opener on Friday against Starmount.
