It was a tough winter sports season for Ashe County in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings. The Huskies fell from first place to fifth place after holding a slim lead after the fall sports season.
Wilkes Central jumped to first place after a second place finish in men’s basketball and a second place finish in wrestling.
Elkin made the biggest jump from fifth place to second place after winning the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in men’s basketball and in women’s swimming.
Central currently has 74.5 points followed by Elkin in second with 63.5 points, tied with Forbush after the Falcons scored a conference title in men’s swimming and a second place finish in women’s swimming.
West Wilkes is fourth with 59.5 points. After that, the Huskies and the North Wilkes Vikings sit fifth with 56.5 points followed by East Wilkes (45), Starmount (41), and Alleghany (28).
Elsewhere, Avery County sits in fourth place in the Western Highlands 1A/2A standings with 86.5 points. Hendersonville sits comfortably in front with 110 points.
In the Northwestern 3A/4A conference, Watauga is in first place overall with 123 points. The Pioneers won the conference in men’s swimming and was second place in women’s swimming to maintain a lead it held after the fall sports season. The Pioneers did have a solid 14 point advantage, but are now only nine points in front of Hickory after they were crowned conference champions in women’s basketball and finished second in men’s basketball.
