A local woman escaped an accident at 5087 N.C. 163 with only minor injuries earlier this afternoon when she flipped her car onto its side, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The woman was identified as Janice Watts, 58, according to N.C. State Trooper Kevin Aldridge who responded to the accident.
The accident occurred when Watts was traveling northbound on N.C. 163 in her Chrysler Town and Country. According to Aldridge, Watts drove off the right side of the road, hitting a ditch and turning her vehicle onto the drivers side, sliding before coming to a rest.
Aldridge said Watts sustained cuts and bruises, but no serious injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which was caused by a drop in the drivers blood sugar.
“It looks like she just blacked out; she’s a diabetic,” said Aldridge.
“It looked a lot worse than it actually was,” said Aldridge. He also said she was secured in her seat belt during the accident, helping prevent further injury.
Watts was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital by Blue Ridge Medical Transport to treat her minor injuries.
Along with Blue Ridge Medical Transport and N.C. State Highway Patrol, the West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the accident.
