A special congratulations goes out to Ashe County High School senior Lucas Zeller, who has been named as a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

“I’m excited about going to college,” said Zeller. He also said he was excited about hearing the results of the National Merit Scholarship.

High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT. Semi-finalists for the scholarship are determined by a student’s PSAT scores from junior year, which are in the top one or two percent in North Carolina.

In order to become a finalist, students must submit an application that includes a transcript, essay and a recommendation from a counselor.

Out of 50,000 students across the United States, Zeller is now one of 8,200 who has great potential to qualify for numerous merit-based scholarships, which are awarded based on the students academic abilities, school involvement, leadership, and accomplishments.

However, not every finalist will receive scholarship funding. Funding is based on which school a student will attend, along with other factors. The recipients of scholarship funding will be announced within the next week.

Zeller said he has been accepted to Amherst College in Massachusetts, and plans on attending this fall. His selection as a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship was included on his application to Amherst.

“Being a National Merit Scholarship finalist is an outstanding accomplishment,” said ACHS counselor Tara Miller. By winning this scholarship competition, Zeller represents ACHS by being one of the highest academic achievers from North Carolina.

Zeller said his parents, George Zeller and Lynn Robinson, were both proud of his accomplishments.
