Rev. Claybern D. Roten, age 69, of Benton Lane, North Wilkesboro, NC, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, at Cricket Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean Rector, the Rev. Charlie McCoy, the Rev. Lloyd Day, and Mr. Randy Miller officiating. Burial was in Calvary Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rev. Roten was born in Wilkes County, Feb. 23, 1940, to John and Nora Clyde Stanley Roten. He was a member of Cricket Baptist Church. Rev. Roten was a minister for 30 years. He pastured several churches in Wilkes and Ashe counties including Big Ridge Community Church, Wagoner Baptist Church, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and Mount Olive Baptist Church. Rev. Roten was employed at Randy Miller Lumber Company until his retirement.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Roten was preceded in death by five sisters, Nina Kilby, Ola Roten, Hazel Hanes, Mozell Watkins, and Eva Wingler; five brothers, Estradie Roten, Enoch Roten, Carl Roten, Tam Roten, and Ray "Doc" Roten.

Rev. Roten is survived by his wife, Brenda Jean Barnes Roten of the home; one son, Ricky Clay Roten and wife, Kathy, of Millers Creek, NC; two sisters, Geneva Taylor of Gastonia, NC and Inez South of Winston-Salem, NC; one brother, David Roten of Millers Creek, NC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, 1908 West Park Drive, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
