The coaching carousel continues to spin as the Appalachian State Mountaineers have lost yet another top coach to a Football Bowl Subdivision school.

Former defensive coordinator John Wiley has left ASU and has been named associate head coach as well as linebackers coach at East Carolina.

Last week, former ASU defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil was named as head coach of the ECU Pirates, thus making Wiley a logical choice to join McNeil in Greenville. Wiley coached the defensive backs under McNeil at ASU who was the Mountaineers’ defensive coordinator from 1993-96.

Wiley took over as defensive coordinator in 1998 and held that position until his departure on Monday.

The Mountaineer defense has been key to the team’s five consecutive Southern Conference championships, including producing three SoCon Defensive Player of the Year recipients during that stretch in Marques Murrell, Corey Lynch, and Jacque Roman.

It is not currently known who will replace Wiley, or former offensive line coach Shawn Elliott, who took the same position at South Carolina under head coach Steve Spurrier.
