County sports hall of fame banquet set for April 24

The Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame will hold its Third Annual Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Ashe County High School. The Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with a catered dinner by Smoky Mountain Barbeque followed by the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. The Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Jeffersons.
The Keynote Speaker for the 2010 Sports Hall of Fame will be Tommy Burleson. Mr. Burleson resides in Avery County and was the Center for the N.C. State Wolfpack when they won the 1974 NCAA Basketball Championship. He also played for the USA Team in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Tommy played professional basketball for eight seasons with the Seattle Sonics, Kansas City Kings, and the Atlanta Hawks. Currently, Mr. Burleson works for the Avery County Planning Department and also oversees Tommy Burleson Christian Evangelistic Ministries in which he outlines: my passion is to do mission outreach ministries on a local, national and worldwide level."
The 2010 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees this year include Scott Davis, Tony Eldreth, Martin Little, Wayne Burgess, and Robert Burgess. These inductees join the company of the 2009 inductees consisting of Col. C. E. Francis, Bradley Lopp, Lane Hurley, members of the 1961-62 Lansing Football Team and the 1962-63 Lansing Football Team, as well as the 2008 inductees of Molly Sue Gambill, Max Hurley, Dr. Dean C. Jones, Jr., Edwin Taylor, Montie Weaver, Morris Walker, Wade Rose, and the 1964-65 Ashe Central High School Panthers basketball team.
The Sports Hall of Fame Committee requests the attendance of all prior years Inductees and will offer a complimentary ticket for the Inductee. The Inductee is requested to wear their Induction medallion to the 2010 Sports Hall of Fame Banquet to demonstrate their accomplishment and recognition. Inductees may contact a Committee member to reserve their complimentary ticket and to purchase additional tickets for other family members and friends.
The Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame seeks to recognize and honor sportsmen and women in individual and team sports, including representatives from not only the traditional ball sports of basketball, football, baseball & golf; but also hunting, game fishing, racing, and many others. Nominations may be submitted year round and remain on file for consideration each year. The Committee encourages the public to submit an application for any individuals (living or deceased) or Teams meeting the above criteria.
Tickets to the dinner and induction ceremony are available at the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce, Peoples Rexall Drug Store, and Smoky Mountain Barbeque. Ticket prices are $20 per person for adults, $15 per person for ages 18 and under.
