WEST JEFFERSON — Former Ashe County Commissioner and West Jefferson Alderman Bob McCoy, 77, recently passed away this past month.
According to Mayor Dale Baldwin, McCoy grew up in the Creston area and lived in West Jefferson for the last 40 years.
McCoy served on the West Jefferson board of aldermen for over a decade and as a county commissioner in the early 80’s.
Baldwin said he knew McCoy all his life and the two were close friends.
“He was real public minded, probably one of the most public minded people I’ve ever served with. He would listen to anybody that came in and tried to work with them,” Baldwin said. “Whether we could do it or whether we couldn’t, he would try to help anybody out. He was just that way. I never did hear him say a bad word about anybody.”
As an Ashe County native, McCoy opened up several service stations and stores in the county.
Baldwin said the two played cards many Wednesday nights, something that McCoy always looked forward to.
“He was just an all around good person,” Baldwin said.
McCoy is survived by two daughters, Sharon and Gina.
