Ashe County wreck report

ASHE COUNTY — The following accidents that occurred between Aug. 9 and Aug. 15 were reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and are considered public record.

Aug. 10

Crumpler

A single-vehicle accident happened at 3:26 p.m. on Col. Francis Road in Crumpler. According to the narrative, Eric William Martin of Crumpler was traveling east at a high rate of speed when Martin lost control of the vehicle in a curve, ran off the left side of the road before striking a mailbox. The vehicle then traveled back on the road, ran off the road to the right and hit a fence. The vehicle eventually came to a rest in a field.

Martin and a passenger, Ethan Sizemore of Crumpler, refused medical transport.

The 2001 Chevrolet involved had about $5,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The fence and mailbox belonging to Danny Phipps of Crumpler had about $1,000 in damages.

Martin was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Warrensville

A single-vehicle accident happened at 3:55 p.m. on Copeland Road in Warrensville. According to the narrative, Leland Miles Hildreth of Melbourne, Florida was traveling south when the shoulder of the road gave way and the vehicle overturned down an embankment, colliding with several small trees before coming to a stop.

Hildreth was uninjured.

The 2015 Ford truck involved had about $10,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident took place at 9:51 p.m. on Old Highway 16 about 2.5 miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, a vehicle was traveling south when the car ran off the road left of center. The vehicle collided with a tree and spun around, struck a second tree and came to a rest.

The vehicle was empty when Trooper W.P. Miller arrived.

The 1999 Dodge belonging to Midway Auto Sales in West Jefferson had approximately $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations have been issued.

Aug. 11

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened at 7:55 a.m. on Highway 194 about five miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Treythan Lawrence Scott of Fleetwood was traveling north when the vehicle entered a right hand curve, ran off the right side of the road and struck a fence. The truck slid down an embankment before coming to rest in a field. The driver stated that he swerved to miss a vehicle that was across the center line.

Scott was uninjured.

The 2003 GMC truck had about $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The fence belonging to Donald Houck of West Jefferson had about $250 in damages.

Scott was cited for a lane control violation.

Lansing

A single-vehicle accident took place at 5:43 p.m. on Tucker Road about eight miles from Lansing. According to the narrative, William Frank Blevins Jr., of Lansing was traveling south when the left front wheel came off the vehicle, causing damages to the left front fender. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road coming to a stop on the shoulder.

Blevins was uninjured.

The 1999 Jeep had an estimated $1,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

Aug. 12

Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened at 11 a.m. on Highway 221 in Jefferson. According to the narrative, a vehicle parked in the parking lot of Jefferson Welding was not put into park and rolled backwards across Highway 221, hitting a vehicle driven by Iona Handy Rutherford of Grassy Creek.

Rutherford was uninjured.

The 1998 Subaru that rolled into the highway, owned by Anita Lynn Taylor of Lansing, had about $1,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Rutherford’s 2005 Chrysler had about $2,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

Aug. 13

Jefferson

A motorcycle accident happened at 7:45 a.m. on Chestnut Hill Road about nine miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, Bryan Jacob Brannon of West Jefferson was traveling north when his motorcycle struck a deer that ran into the road. Brannon was ejected from the motorcycle off the left side of the road.

Brannon was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

The 2008 Harley Davidson had about $6,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident took place at 6:39 p.m. on Highway 88 about two miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Garry Franklin Boorse Jr., of Lansing was traveling west when he drove left of center to avoid traffic stopped in the westbound lane. Boorse struck a vehicle driven by Joseph Ryan Newton of China Grove, North Carolina.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Boorse’s 1996 Chevrolet had about $500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Newton’s 2011 Chevrolet had about $1,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

Boorse was cited for driving left of center.

Aug. 14

Creston

A single-vehicle accident occurred at 7:36 a.m on Big Laurel Road in Creston. According to the narrative, Leandra Lane Owens of Mountain City, Tennessee was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road to the right. The driver over corrected, traveled left of center and off the road to the left. The vehicle then traveled back onto the road, across the center line again and off the road to the right, into a tree and then down an embankment.

Owens was uninjured.

The 1997 Chevrolet involved had about $5,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Owens was cited for exceeding safe speed, driving left of center, driving with a borrowed tag and driving a vehicle with no inspection.

Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened at 4:12 p.m. on Highway 88 in Jefferson. According to the narrative, Katelyn Rose Davis of Warrensville was traveling west when she ran off the road to the right and struck a guardrail.

Davis was uninjured.

The 2007 Ford involved had about $2,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

Davis was cited for having unsafe tires.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident occurred at 4:34 p.m. on Highway 221 in West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Sydney Nichole Rodriguez of West Jefferson was stopped for traffic when a vehicle driven by Amelia Catelin Baldwin of West Jefferson struck Rodriguez’s vehicle in the rear.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Baldwin’s 2001 Ford had about $3,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Rodriguez’s 2008 Nissan had about $500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Baldwin was cited for failure to reduce speed.

Crumpler

An animal collision happened at 9:16 p.m. on Shatley Springs Road in Crumpler. According to the narrative, Lucy Taylor Barker of Lansing was traveling east when her vehicle hit a deer that ran into the road.

Barker was uninjured.

The 2005 Ford had approximately $1,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

Aug. 15

Fleetwood

An animal collision happened at 10:05 a.m. on Highway 221 in Fleetwood. According to the narrative, Betty Winans Akers of Fleetwood was traveling south when a deer ran into the roadway and collided with the front of Akers’ vehicle.

Akers was uninjured.

The 2014 Honda had about $2,000 in damages but was considered drivable.
