ASHE COUNTY — Ashe County Animal Control shelter manager Joe Testerman appeared before the Ashe County Board of Commissioners during their regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8 to to give an update on the animal shelter’s most recent inspection.
On March 25, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Veterinary Division sent a letter of warning to Testerman regarding violations found at the shelter in an inspection on March 16.
Those violations included chipped and peeling paint on floors and walls, missing cross contamination barriers between outdoor enclosures, significant odor upon entering the cat room and an inoperable light at the entrance from the cat room into the dog enclosure area.
According to Testerman, all the violations have been corrected and the animal shelter passed inspection after a visit from state inspectors on Aug. 31.
“The place looks as good as it has in a long time,” Testerman said.
“I’m really proud of how you and your staff handled that,” County Manager Sam Yearick said.
Testerman also reported that the shelter has taken in 498 total animals, 214 dogs and 284 cats in the last year. Of those animals, the shelter has adopted out 295 total animals, 159 dogs and 136 cats.
The Ashe County Animal Control shelter is located at 767 Fred Pugh Road in Crumpler and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. For more information, call 336-982-4060.
