WEST JEFFERSON — Seniors gathered for a “Paint with Raney Art Party” on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Ashe Senior Center.

Twice a month, local artist Raney Rogers hosts the parties which allow students of all skill levels to create their own work of art to take home.

Rogers has been painting professionally for 34 years and opened the Acorn Gallery in downtown West Jefferson 21 years ago. She has taught art in public schools and to private students.

Rogers has won numerous awards for her wildlife, landscapes, botanicals and nautical artwork and her work has been displayed nationally and internationally. She first began hosting paint parties in Ashe County last January.

According to Rogers, she has had many repeat students who come back after attending their first “Paint with Raney Art Party.”

Linda Wilson returned Sept. 9 for her second class to enjoy a fun and relaxing environment.

“She’s a great teacher. I was scared to death when I first came because I always felt so awful with art but she makes you feel relaxed,” Wilson said “It was great therapy. I just loved it and loved my painting.”

Lorene Elliott was also present at the party for her second time.

According to Elliott, she returned to the class to gain more experience and to work on loosening up with her painting.

“I love it. I absolutely love it,” Elliott said. “This is a time for me and I can just paint and do what I want.”

According to Rogers, Ann Helms has participated in all the parties she has hosted at the senior center so far.

Helms said that she keeps coming back simply because “it’s a party.”

Rogers wants to welcome everyone to come and participate in one of her classes.

“I want to welcome people to come step out of themselves, step out of their boxes and get creative and see how it changes their lives,” Rogers said.

The cost of to participate in a “Paint with Raney Art Party” is only $25 including all supplies.
