New look for Appalachian Flooring & Tile

WEST JEFFERSON-For the second time in less than two years, Appalachian Flooring and Tile is showing off a new look.

That’s according to owners Brandi Burgess and her fiancee Chris Phipps. The pair recently moved from their old location across from Shokudo’s in West Jefferson to 422 E. Second Street. That move came on Dec. 7.

“We just see this market getting ready to really move again,” Burgess said. “So we made the move across town to a spot with more space and more curb appeal so that, hopefully, we can take advantage of that as it happens.”

Burgess and Phipps bought what was once known as Ashe Carpet and Tile – it’d been in business for a decade – in July of 2014, and changed the company’s name to Appalachian Flooring and Tile.

Burgess said she and Phipps, a longtime general contractor, could see ever increasing demand for flooring, despite a High Country housing market that hasn’t rebounded from the Great Recession as fast as other parts of the southeast. She said new flooring is usually seen as an essential part of home remodels, which sometimes increase even in soft housing markets.

“But right now we’re seeing about a 50/50 split between home remodels and new construction,” Burgess said. “We’ve even seen folks who have put down new flooring in anticipation of selling their home and then getting started building their new home. We’re hoping before too much longer new construction will make up a majority of the work we’re doing.”

The company sells everything from carpet tile and laminate flooring to linoleum and hardwood options. Burgess said Appalachian Flooring & Tile also sells home remodel essentials like plumbing fixtures, counter tops and shower doors along with installation services for all their products.

“I think a lot of people just automatically assume they have to look off the mountain for a lot of these options,” Burgess said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to change their mind and help folks realize you don’t have to leave Ashe to find everything you’re looking for.”
