ASHE COUNTY — The following accidents between Jan. 17 and Jan. 23 were reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and are considered public record.

Jan. 17

2:50 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident took place on Beaver Creek School Road about three miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Sarah Elizabeth Houck of West Jefferson was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a concrete culvert. The vehicle then overturned and came to a rest on its top.

Houck refused medical transport.

The 2008 Hyundai involved had about $6,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

Jan. 18

2:47 p.m.

Lansing

A two-vehicle accident took place on Deep Ford Road about three miles from Lansing. According to the narrative, Fairley Ray Davis of Lansing was traveling west and attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway. A vehicle driven by Quinton Bryan Patrick of Lansing failed to reduce speed and swerved across the center line, striking Davis’ vehicle in the left side as he was turning.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Patrick’s 2003 Ford had about $700 in damages but was considered drivable.

Davis’ 2000 Chevrolet had about $2,800 in damages but was considered drivable.

Patrick was cited for failure to reduce speed.

Jan. 20

8:48 a.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident took place on Highway 221 about four miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Nikki Ella Gilley of Warrensville was traveling south on Highway 221 when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch and then an embankment.

Gilley refused medical transport.

The 2008 Toyota had about $4,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Gilley was cited for failure to maintain lane control.

2:04 p.m.

Fleetwood

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 near Liberty Grove Church Road near Fleetwood. According to the narrative, Anna Leigh Hunt Eller of Fleetwood was slowing to make a left turn onto Liberty Grove Church Road when a vehicle driven by Orville Larry Cole Jr. of Vilas could not slow down in time and struck Eller’s vehicle in the rear.

Both drivers refused medical transport.

Cole’s 2012 Subaru had about $500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Eller’s 2010 Toyota had about $500 in damages but was considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

2:05 p.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 about five miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, David Victor Thomas of Fleetwood was stopped on the shoulder of the road. Thomas pulled onto the road but did not see a vehicle driven by Curtis Robert Wagner of Conover and struck Wagner’s vehicle in the side.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Thomas’ 2007 Ford had about $800 in damages but was considered drivable.

Wagner’s 2001 Toyota had about $2,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Thomas was cited for a safe movement violation.

2:10 p.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 about two miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Kathryn Bolen Yates of Deep Gap was traveling south on Highway 221 which was snow covered. Yates’ vehicle crossed the center line and struck a vehicle head on driven by Susan Lee Strong.

Yates, Strong and a passenger, Agnes Houck Baldwin of West Jefferson, were transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital. Baldwin was later transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where she died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Yates’ vehicle had an estimated $6,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Strong’s 2008 Hyunadi had an estimated $7,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Yates was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

2:18 p.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 at the intersection of Highway 163. According to the narrative, Hollie Michelle Harris of West Jefferson was stopped at a stop light waiting to turn right onto Highway 221 Business. Stanton Cooper Moore of Jefferson could not get stopped on the snow-covered road and struck Harris.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Moore’s 2002 GMC had about $750 in damages but was considered drivable.

Harris’ 2006 Ford had about $250 in damages but was considered drivable.

Moore was cited for exceeding safe speeds for road conditions.

2:53 p.m.

Fleetwood

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 near Fleetwood. According to the narrative, Porter Winfred Hicks of Fleetwood was traveling south and Jennifer Mae Reese of Jefferson was traveling north. Reese exceeded a safe speed and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle crossed the center line and struck Hicks’ vehicle. Reese’s vehicle continued off the right side of the road and struck an embankment.

Both drivers and one passenger, Lois Kohler Rhoades of Fleetwood, refused medical transport.

Reese’s 1996 Ford had about $4,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Hicks’ 2014 Ford had about $5,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Reese was cited for exceeding safe speeds.

2:55 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened Eagle Ridge Drive, a private drive about four miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Martin Duane Peters of Jefferson was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, struck a telephone junction box and an electrical junction box. The vehicle then overturned and struck a tree.

Peters and two passengers, David Shane Hall of Crumpler and Matthew Wilcox of Crumpler were transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital. One passenger, Joseph Kevin Francis of Warrensville, refused medical transport.

The 2010 Nissan involved had approximately $4,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The telephone junction box belonging to Skyline had about $1,000 in damages.

The electrical junction box belonging to Blue Ridge Electric had about $1,000 in damages.

No citations were issued.

3:32 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened on Highway 194 less than a mile from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Kenneth Allan Morgan of Edgewater, Florida was traveling west when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a mailbox and a tree before coming to a rest.

Morgan was uninjured.

The 2007 Hyundai involved had an estimated $900 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The mailbox belonging to Willa Tucker of West Jefferson had about $100 in damages.

Morgan was cited for a safe movement violation.

4:09 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened on Dogget Road in West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Fernando Valtierra Luna of Fleetwood was traveling east when the vehicle ran off the road to the left and over an embankment. The vehicle then overturned and came to a rest in a creek.

Luna was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

The 2009 Chevrolet involved had an estimated $6,900 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Luna was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a license.

9:24 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened on Highway 163 about a mile from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Abraham John Hakobian of Grassy Creek was traveling west when the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left. The vehicle collided with a guardrail, overturned and came to a stop.

Hakobian and a passenger, Marcella Ivonne Wilson of Grassy Creek, were uninjured.

The 2002 Chevrolet involved had approximately $1,900 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The guardrail had about $500 in damages.

Hakobian was cited for a safe movement violation.

Jan. 21

8:44 a.m.

Idlewild Road

A single-vehicle accident happened on Cross Creek Lane just off of Idlewild Road about nine miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Stephen Arthur Weddle of West Jefferson was traveling west when the vehicle started sliding backwards. The vehicle slid off the road to the right, overturned down an embankment and came to a rest on its right side.

Weddle was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

The 2011 Mack truck had about $7,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

2:42 p.m.

Sturgills

A single-vehicle accident happened on Helton Creek Road in the Sturgills community near the Virginia state line. According to the narrative, Cecil Junior Taylor of Damascus, Virginia was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, down an embankment and overturned into a creek.

Taylor was transported to Johnson City Medical Center and one passenger, Tiffany Michelle Phipps of Lansing, was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

The 2006 Toyota had about $6,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

4:54 p.m.

Lansing

A single-vehicle accident happened on Mud Creek Road about three miles from Lansing. According to the narrative, Steven Lynn Jones of Lansing was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a utility pole and telephone box. The vehicle then overturned and came to a stop.

Jones was uninjured.

The 1991 Chevrolet involved had about $3,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The utility pole and telephone box belonging to Skyline had about $4,000 in damages.

Jones was cited for a safe movement violation.

7:14 p.m.

West Jefferson

An animal collision happened on Highway 221 about three miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Deborah Jordan Miller of Fleetwood was traveling south when her vehicle struck a deer that ran into the road.

Miller was uninjured.

The 2010 Ford involved had approximately $2,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Jan. 22

3:05 p.m.

Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened on Highway 88 about seven miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, Nikki Renee Romans of Crumpler was traveling east when Romans lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road. The vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a guardrail.

Romans and one passenger, Andrew Wade Noblett of Laurel Springs, were uninjured.

The 2004 Ford had about $6,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

The guardrail had about $900 in damages.

Romans was cited for driving with an expired registration and no vehicle inspection.
