CRESTON-An elderly woman was killed this morning after her car careened down an embankment on Big Laurel Road shortly after 8 a.m.
Lois Nichols, 86, of Creston, was traveling south in a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass in the 2000-block of Big Laurel Road at the time of the accident, according to North Carolina State Trooper Kevin Aldridge.
“She entered a left hand curve, traveled off the ride side of the roadway and hit a guard rail,” Aldridge said. “The vehicle traveled approximately 50-feet down an embankment and overturned in the river.”
Aldridge said Nichols, who was not wearing her seat belt, was on her way to Riverview Community Center when the accident occurred at roughly 8:10 a.m. on June 14.
“There was a witness traveling behind her and another driver came along just a minute later and they Nichols out of her car,” Aldridge said. “They performed CPR for an extended period of time until medics arrived but they were unable to resuscitate her.”
Aldridge said speed was not a factor in the crash.
