JEFFERSON-A local woman is breathing a sigh of relief this week, as a nationally recognized bank has agreed to refund her money following a questionable transaction at a local ATM.
When LeAnn Reece Martin pulled up at the 5/3 bank ATM in Jefferson, she was expecting to receive 15 $20 bills. Instead, she received something better suited for the post office.
“I worked in Sparta on Tuesday and needed cash to pay for my sons camp when I returned to Boone,” said Marting. “I’m familiar with Ashe but haven’t ever had to use an ATM there. My phone showed the 5/3 ATM near me so I went through. I selected withdraw $300 cash from savings. Instead of receiving 15 $20 bills, I received 15 sheets of forever stamps.”
Martin remained in the drive thru perplexed and shocked.
“Being in shock I stayed in front of the ATM and Googled the 5/3 number as I didn’t want anyone else to come thru and have that problem,” she said. “They were not concerned told me they didn’t have proof I didn’t really get cash.”
After some initial confusion, Reece said she was able to have the matter sorted out and the Jefferson branch has since agreed to return her money.
In response to the incident, Liz Clifford, assisted marketing manager for the bank, released a brief statement.
“We are aware of the situation with the ATM in Jefferson and are reaching out directly to affected customers,” said Clifford.
Despite the hardship she has endured, Martin said she’s just relieved it wasn’t worse.
“I was fortunate this wasn’t money for my groceries or the last of my money, but it could be for someone else,” she said.
