WEST JEFFERSON-Some of the High Country’s best budding hoops stars were on display at Ashe County High School last week.

More than 70 elementary and middle school aged young ladies turned out for the 15th annual Girls Got Game basketball camp June 28-30, at ACHS.

The skills clinic has become a summer right of passage for girls looking to up their game. It’s focused on basketball fundamentals – dribbling, ball movement, defense and shooting – but it also recognizes standout individual campers who win certain age level categories, like free throw and layups.

“We had a great turnout of both young and older players for the 15th annual Girls Got Game basketball camp,” longtime Ashe County High School Lady Huskies Head Coach Laura Foster said. “I am very pleased with their effort and intensity throughout camp. They worked hard, were very coach-able and had a lot of fun.”

Individual winners include:

1st Grade Dribbling: Champion -Emmie Jones (Runner-up: Piper Hess)

2nd Grade Dribbling: Champion – Abbigail Wonsick (Runner-up: Takala Barnes)

3rd/4th Grade X-Out Layups: Champion – Hannah Osborne (Runner-up: Ally Greer)

3rd/4th Grade Free Throws: Champion – Hannah Osborne (Runner-up: Ally Greer & Ava Roten)

5th/6th Grade X-Out Layups: Champion – Morgan Phipps (Runner-up: Kirklyn Hudler)

5th/6th Grade Hot Shot: Champion – Katelyn French (Runner-up: Chloe Blevins)

5th/6th Grade Free Throws: Champion – Kirklyn Hudler (Runner-ups: Katlyn French & Gabby Hilliard)

7th/8th Grade One on One: Champion – Chloe Hamm (Runner-up: Sebrina Paige Brooks)

Foster thanked her current and former players that volunteered to help sponsor the camp, and thanked parents and campers for choosing to attend Girls Got Game.

“There are a lot of options, a lot of different camps you could have attended this summer,” Foster said to the campers. “I want to thank you for choosing this one. The future of the Lady Huskies appears to be bright. Lots of players here with great potential.”
