WEST JEFFERSON-On Saturday, August, 27, 2016, the Blue Ridge Art Clan (BRAC) will meet at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church and feature Stephen Shoemaker, prominent North Carolina watercolor artist, for a lecture/demonstration on Approaches to Realism with Acrylics.

After many years of painting in watercolors, Shoemaker notes, “I have enjoyed the challenge and relearning experience of returning to the use of acrylics.”

He looks forward to sharing the many aspects he is currently enjoying and the new things he has learned. His latest, and largest, acrylic painting is now hanging in the lobby of Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Stephen Sharp Shoemaker was born and raised in our neck of the woods. Criticized for ‘doodling’ too much in class, he took his first art lessons at age 10 with Flossie Farr and Archie Black in the old block building across the street from the West Jefferson Elementary School.

Stephen received a BS Degree in Art from Appalachian State University after serving two years in the military. He has been a full time watercolor artist since 1983, concentrating on dry brush landscapes and trains. He sells original work and limited edition prints and has had many one and two-man shows.

Shoemaker’s work has been exhibited at the Mint Museum and Queen’s Gallery in Charlotte and regularly at the Ashe County Arts Council. He has work in Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia as well as the U.S. in many banking and corporate settings. Stephen was featured in “Our State Magazine” in 2007 as well as on “Our State” UNC-TV.

He won “Best in Show” in a juried fine art competition and exhibition held at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson in 2008. He has painted several outdoor murals including one of the historic Virginia Creeper train that serviced the mountain area in the last century.

He returned to his hometown in 1993 into the same house he grew up in where he now lives with his wife, Nancy, a talented artist herself. These days, Stephen spends his days ‘doodling’ and painting in his own studio in downtown West Jefferson.

Very active in the community, it is no surprise Stephen was awarded Ashe County’s individual “Volunteer if the Year” award for 2006.

He has served as Town Alderman for the last 6 years and as a board member of Ashe Memorial Hospital for 4 years.

He’s a member of the West Jefferson Methodist Church Building Committee, the Courthouse Preservation Organization, Elk Shoals Chapel Committee and the Old Hickory Boy Scouts Fundraising Committee.

He is a past board member of the Ashe County Arts Council and West Jefferson Planning Board.

Stephen has donated many prints and logos to community service organizations and local fundraisers. He is a board member and regular teacher at Florence Thomas Art School in West Jefferson. From drawing to whittlin’ to watercolors, Stephen has shared his talents with students from beginners to advanced.

BRAC meets at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church, 201 S. Jefferson Ave., W. Jefferson, NC at 9:30 am for Refreshments and Business; 10:30-Noon: Program/Demo by Stephen Shoemaker. BRAC membership is open to actively working artists and those interested in the Arts. Annual dues are $45. Visitors and guests are welcome.
