WEST JEFFERSON — The North Carolina Assisted Living Association announced today that Brittany Winebarger, Horizons activity director at Forest Ridge Assisted Living in West Jefferson, will be presented the 2015 Assisted Living Hero Award at the association’s annual conference in October. Winebarger is one of three winners chosen from more than 30 nominations submitted by assisted living community leaders across North Carolina.
Hero Awards honor employees who make the lives of assisted living residents more rewarding. Award winners are exemplary in protecting each resident’s right to privacy, work to foster independence, and promote the individuality of each resident.
Winebarger joined Forest Ridge in 2011 as a dietary aid and later worked as a certified nursing assistant, providing hands-on care for Forest Ridge’s residents. In 2013, she was promoted to her current role, where she supervises social activities that enhance the overall wellness of Forest Ridge’s Alzheimer’s and dementia residents.
“Brittany caters the activities she creates to the individual interests of the residents, which encourages participation, regardless of ability,” said Cameron Keziah, executive director of Forest Ridge. “Brittany’s humility and compassion allow her to connect with residents on a level that fosters trust and encourages participation.”
Brittany is married to Robbie Winebarger and lives in Creston. They have a 6-month-old son named Carson.
Forest Ridge will hold an award presentation to honor Winebarger from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. Refreshments will be served and the community is invited to attend.
