WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County varsity volleyball team dropped its first three conference matches of the season.
Ashe traveled to Alleghany on Sept. 3 and was defeated, 3-0. The Trojans took the first set, 25-15 and went on to score 25-10 and 25-11 wins in the second and third sets to sweep the match.
The following game, Ashe played host to Elkin and played much closer, but was still on the losing end of a 3-0 match.
Elkin held on to win the first set, 25-21 and won the second set a bit easier with a 25-16 win. In the third set, Ashe battled hard again, but Elkin held on for a 25-20 win.
On Thursday, Ashe was at home again, this time to the Starmount Rams. The Rams cruised to a 3-0 win. Set scores were 25-6, 25-17 and 25-16.
Ashe (0-8 0-3 MVAC) will be on the road on Tuesday at Wilkes Central and at East Wilkes on Thursday.
MOUNT AIRY — On Sept. 8, the Lady Huskies traveled to Cross Creek Country Club for a non-conference match with eight teams in the region.
Ashe finished third overall with a team score of 151.
Mount Airy won the match, shooting a score of 135, beating second place Surry Central by 12 shots.
South Stokes was fourth with a score of 159. East Surry (173) was fifth followed by Alleghany (175) in sixth, North Stokes (183) in seventh and Walkertown (189) in eighth.
Ashe’s Sarah Hardin had the third best individual score, shooting a 44. Mount Airy’s Alyssa Cox shot a 33, good enough for a six-shot win over second place Autumn Sentor of Surry Central. Nicole Rogers from South Stokes was fourth (45) and Haley Hagwood from Mount Airy was fifth (48).

Ashe golfers return to the course on Wednesday at High Meadows Country Club. This will be the first Mountain Valley Athletic Conference match of the season.
