Volleyball teams get first wins

WEST JEFFERSON — The varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams finally saw their hard work pay off with a mark in the win column.

The varsity team has won two matches in a row that began at home against West Caldwell on Monday and followed with a road win at Wilkes Central on Tuesday.

Against West Caldwell, the Warriors won the first set in a tiebreaker, 29-27.

Ashe rallied back to take the next three sets and win the match. The Huskies won the second set, 25-23 and followed that up with a 25-19 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, Ashe held off the Warriors by a 25-21 score to win the team’s first match of the year.

The Lady Huskies swept Wilkes Central 3-0 to earn the first Mountain Valley Conference win of the year. Ashe won by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-18.

The JV team earned a 2-0 win over West Caldwell for their first victory. The Huskies easily handled the Warriors in both sets by identical 25-12 scores.

Ashe County (2-7 overall, 1-3 MVAC) will be back at home for both matches next week. The Lady Huskies host North Wilkes on Tuesday and West Wilkes on Thursday.
