WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County added a key conference win on Monday taking down Starmount by a 7-2 score, winning the match without top seed Keely Caddell who had to forfeit her match with an ankle injury.
“This was a big win for us and I am very proud of our team effort,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.
Amber Hurst beat Caddell 6-0 in the first set and Ashe’s top seed finally had to give in to the ankle injury and forfeit in the second set.
Starmount’s second seed Olivia Greene beat Morgan Church, 6-0, 6-1.
After that, it was all Ashe County.
Third seed Caroline Current beat Emily Mendenhall in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Fourth seed Josie Cooper beat Alyssa Hicks, 6-3, 6-1. Fifth seeded Callie Powell edged McKenzie Motley 6-2, 7-6 and Anna Corley gave the Lady Huskies its fourth win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charity McCullough.
Ashe swept all three doubles matches.
Church and Current beat Hurst and Greene, 8-1. Cooper and Powell beat Mendenhall and Hicks by an 8-2 score and the tandem of Corley and Kaylie Fernandez edged Motley and McCullough, 8-5.
“This was a very good win for us and should give us confidence going forward,” said Coach Dix.
Ashe will start the second half of conference play next week.
