WEST JEFFERSON — With two conference games in the books, the Ashe County Huskies have yet to surrender a goal, which included Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Elkin.
Ashe defeated Alleghany 9-0 on Monday before this victory to give Ashe a 2-0 conference start.
Oswaldo Barcenas put the Huskies on the board in the 25th minute with a goal.
With three minutes left in the half, Ashe nearly took a 2-0 lead but a shot from Erik Barcenas was stopped.
The Huskies held a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Husky offense got its attack going early on. Ashe had a corner kick in the first minute of the half and followed that up with another corner 10 minutes later. The Elkin defense was able to escape with no harm done.
In the 59th minute, the Husky offense broke through again with a goal on a free kick from senior co-captain Kendall Wagner.
Three minutes later, senior striker and fellow co-captain Victor Melo added the third and final tally of the night with a nice shot in against the Elkin keeper.
The Husky defense stood strong for 80 minutes of play. Sophomore Daniel Lipscomb started in goal and made a few nice saves including a leaping effort in the 72nd minute to preserve the shutout.
Ashe County moved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the MVAC.
Elkin is now 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the MVAC.
Up next, the Huskies are scheduled to host Starmount (Monday) and travel to Wilkes Central (Wednesday).
