WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County picked up its sixth conference victory of the season on Tuesday with a convincing 9-0 win over visiting North Wilkes.

“This was a good conference win for us. I like the way our players went to the net and used the court to their advantage,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

Top seed Keely Caddell returned from an ankle injury but was still slowed a bit on the court according to Coach Dix. Caddell beat Laura Phillips in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

While one injured player returned, the Lady Huskies lost another one of its top six seeds. Ashe was forced to play without third seed Caroline Current who missed this match due to an ankle injury.

Josie Cooper stepped up to play as the third seed and filled in nicely, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brianna DeMario.

Second seed Morgan Church easily handled Angela Jordan by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Callie Powell won the battle of fourth-seeded players with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Brookelynn Roopel.

Fifth seed Kaylie Fernandez and sixth seed Anna Corley capped off the singles sweep with straight set wins over Rebekah Daye and Chelsea Blevins.

In doubles matches, the Husky tandems played three strong matches.

“We played better doubles this match due to more communication and hitting good shots to the open court,” added Coach Dix.

Caddell and Powell were 8-1 winners over Jordan and DeMario. Church and Cooper took down Phillips and Roopel by an 8-2 score and Fernandez and Corley were 8-2 winners over Blevins and Jordan Johnson.

Ashe County moved to 6-6 overall and 6-3 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, remaining in a tie with West Wilkes for the best conference record among 2A teams.

North Wilkes is still seeking its first win of the year as the Vikings fell to 0-8.
