WEST JEFFERSON — Two Mountain Valley Athletic Conference rivals will take the field this Friday night at Ashe County High School.
The unbeaten Wilkes Central Eagles (5-0) will take on the upstart Huskies (2-3) in what could be another wet night of football.
The Eagles hammered in-county rival West Wilkes on Monday, 41-14. The game was postponed from last week due to the weather.
Ashe also had their game rescheduled, moved to a day earlier where they easily handled Alleghany, 40-12. This marked two wins in a row for the Huskies after a tough start to the season with losses to North Surry, Watauga and Hibriten.
Colin Ellis passed for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Skye Sullivan had 86 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown to lead the Huskies to its first MVAC win of the season.
Judd Price and Maison McNeill continued their fantastic seasons. Price had two catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns and McNeill recorded seven catches for 168 yards and a touchdown.
Wilkes Central’s dynamic offense has given all five of its opponents fits. The Eagles have scored no less than 33 points and have scored at least five touchdowns in every contest.
“They (Wilkes Central) like to spread you out, they can run the ball and throw it a lot more than we have seen so it’s going to be completely different preparation this week,” said Ashe County head coach Brian Hampton after last week’s game.
Against West Wilkes, Eagle quarterback Dalton Combs ran for three touchdowns and leading rusher Andrew Bynum ran for three scores as well.
In Wilkes Central’s game against Patton High School, Bynum ran for nearly 300 yards and five touchdowns.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from Ashe County High School, weather permitting.
