SPARTA — Mother Nature cooperated long enough for the women’s tennis team to get a 9-0 victory over Alleghany on the road Wednesday.
“It was another good win for us particularly after not being able to practice due to the weather,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.
The teams decided to play pro sets because of the potential for rain, and it turned out to be the right move according to Coach Dix as rain started to fall while the last doubles match finished up.
Ashe County top seed Keely Caddell earned an 8-1 win over Maddie Whisnant. Second seed Morgan Church was an 8-0 winner against Leah McGrady and Josie Cooper held on for an 8-6 win against Holly Miller.
Fourth seeded Callie Powell ended up beating Iridian Lopez by an 8-3 score. Kaylie Fernandez defeated Yannia Nordelo, 8-1, and sixth seed Anna Corley was an 8-2 winner over Katelyn Davis.
In doubles play, Caddell and Powell were 8-1 winners over Whisnant and McGrady. Church and Cooper beat Miller and Lopez by an 8-4 score and Fernandez and Corley held on to beat Nordelo and Cassidy Cleary as the rain started to fall.
Caroline Current missed another match due to her ankle injury.
“I am proud of how our team rallied together and continued to work on their strokes to get rhythm and consistency,” said Coach Dix. “I am proud of our team’s growth and development.”
Ashe will be back in action on Tuesday at Starmount.
