Ashe golfers repeat as MVAC Champions

WILKESBORO — The Lady Huskies repeated as conference champs after the team’s four-shot victory over East Wilkes last week at Oakwoods Country Club.

Ashe finished with a team score of 159, edging out East Wilkes who finished with 163. Wilkes Central (164) was third followed by Alleghany (173), North Wilkes (176) and Elkin (178)

Sarah Hardin was in a class of her own against the rest of her MVAC competitors. Hardin won by 10 strokes over second place Hunter Tharpe from East Wilkes, shooting a blistering 39. Wilkes Central’s Jade Duncan was third after she shot at 51. Palmer Duncan (Elkin) was fourth with a 53 and Alleghany’s Morgan Finney was fifth, shooting a 55.

Alexis Howell finished with a 59 for Ashe, two shots better than teammates Madison Osborne with 61 and three shots ahead of teammate Katie Orr who finished with a 62. Savannah Brooks did not compete in the match due to an injury.

Wilkes Central finished as conference runner-up with East Wilkes in third, Alleghany fourth, Elkin fifth and North Wilkes in sixth.

Ashe County swept the top postseason honors as Hardin was named MVAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row and head coach Laura Foster was named MVAC Coach of the Year.

Hardin’s season will continue in the NCHSAA Regionals at Cross Creek Country Club in Mount Airy. This is her third trip to regional competition.
