WEST JEFFERSON — The Lady Huskies got off to a slow start, but finished strong on the way to a 47-30 win over Bunker Hill in the 2015-16 season opener.

“We knew Bunker Hill was well coached, athletic and like to shoot the three,” said Ashe County head coach Laura Foster. “But they, like us, lost a lot due to graduation from their team last season.”

Ashe County held a slim 19-17 lead at the half but went on to outscore the Lady Bears, 28-13 in the second half.

Junior guard Chloe Sullivan scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter to help Ashe begin to pull away. Freshman Samantha Woods added five points and Sydney Kate Grubb hit a basket as the Lady Huskies finished the third quarter on a 19-5 run.

“I was really pleased with our effort, particularly on the defensive end. We made some mistakes but none of them were caused by lack of effort. I thought our defense was key to our 3rd quarter run,” said Foster. “We did a really good job of challenging their shooters. It was very good to open the season with a win.”

Woods ended her first varsity game with 14 points that included burying a trio of three-pointers.

Abby Sullivan chipped in eight points, Grubb finished with five and sophomore Lyndsi Holman scored three points.

“This season we only have three returning players. In my 16 seasons, I have never had just three returners,” Foster said. “Our youth and inexperience is a concern for us this season, but they are working really hard and are improving daily. They are eager to learn. I am enjoying coaching this team.”

Brooke Huffman scored 12 points to lead the way for Bunker Hill. Tyra Mitchell finished with 10 points, Crystany White added six and Alexis Moser hit a pair of free throws to round out the scoring for the Lady Bears.

Ashe (1-0) will be back on the court Tuesday at home against Hibriten.

Bunker Hill (0-2) is scheduled to face West Wilkes on Monday, a familiar opponent for Bears head coach Randy Joines. Coach Joines was at North Wilkes before taking the job at Bunker Hill in 2010.
