WEST JEFFERSON — Junior guard Chloe Sullivan scored 14 points for the Lady Huskies, but none were bigger than the layup she hit with six seconds left in overtime to give Ashe a 51-49 victory over West Caldwell on Monday in the Colvard Oil Holiday Classic.

Sullivan was held to just five points in the first half, but came up big when the team needed her the most, scoring seven points in the fourth quarter and the game-winner in OT.

That wasn’t the only key shot of the night for the Lady Huskies.

Trailing by three with under 30 seconds left in the game, freshman Samantha Woods swished a long three-pointer to tie the game and send the contest to overtime. Woods finished the game with 13 points.

West Caldwell had its own opportunities to win the game, but came up a bit short. The Warriors scored the first four points of overtime on baskets from Jazmine Whisnant and Kaitlyn Gurley, but the Lady Huskies stormed back with four points from Woods and a basket from Jayce Miller.

Warrior guard Destiny Marley had a contested three-point look for the win, but the shot barely grazed the rim.

The Lady Huskies improved to 7-3 overall while West Caldwell saw its record drop to 5-5.

Ashe had seven other scorers contribute in Monday night’s win. Abby Sullivan scored five points, Lyndsi Holman had four, Jayce Miller scored four and Savannah Brooks added four. Sydney Kate Grubb finished with three points, Madison Osborne had three points and Madison Warner hit a free throw.

Marley paced the Warriors with 14 points. Annie Bean scored 10, Gurley added 10 and Jade Powell chipped in eight points.

The Lady Huskies jump back into conference play next week when they host North Wilkes on Jan. 5 and travel to East Wilkes on Jan. 8.
