Ashe boys hold off East Wilkes

RONDA — Junior guard Malachi Poe poured in a season-high 29 points to give Ashe County a 79-72 win in a shootout over East Wilkes on Friday night

Poe buried 5-of-8 three-point shots and was 9-of-14 overall from the field.

Fellow junior Judd Price added 12 points and had a team-leading five assists. Dante Shuler dropped in 10 points and added five boards and three steals while senior big man Kendall Richardson just missed another double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Tristen Jones scored six points, Noah Blevins and Colin Ellis each scored four, Grant Thompson added four and Jarod Carlton hit a free throw.

For the Cardinals, senior Andrew Nance scored 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Junior Joah Logan had 16, senior Camon Bryan had 12 and senior Shareef Ray had 12.

Both teams shot the ball pretty well on the evening with Ashe hitting 48-percent of its shots and East Wilkes hitting 44-percent of its attempts.

The Huskies bounced back from a tough home loss to North Wilkes with its fourth Mountain Valley Athletic Conference win of the season. Ashe is now 6-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

East Wilkes suffered its fourth MVAC loss and now sits at 2-9 overall and 0-4 in conference games.

Ashe will have a pair of non-conference games coming up. The Huskies go to Bunker Hill on Tuesday for a varsity-only contest and then host Avery County on Wednesday.

The Cardinals hit the road to Sparta to take on Alleghany on Tuesday.

JV boys

The junior varsity boys also bounced back from its first conference loss last week to North Wilkes by hanging on to beat East Wilkes, 37-35.

The Huskies are 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the MVAC.

Ashe will host Avery County on Wednesday and host Wilkes Central on Friday.
